The US must learn a lesson from the Virginia Tech massacre...

Renowned Management Guru

Two days after the massacre at Virginia Tech, a mentally disturbed man with a .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun opened fire in a house in Queens, NY, killing his mother, mother’s disabled companion & a health care aide. The gunman then killed himself. Sixteen months ago, in the basement of a private home in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, four aspiring rappers, aged 19 to 22, were summarily executed in a barrage of semiautomatic gunfire. Two teenagers were arrested five months later, and one was charged as the gunman.

I had coffee the other day with Marian Wright Edelman, President, Children’s Defense Fund, and she mentioned that since the murders of Robert Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968, well over a million Americans have been killed by firearms in the US. That’s more than the combined US combat deaths in all the wars in all of American history. “We’re losing eight children & teenagers a day to gun violence,” she said. “As far as young people are concerned, we lose the equivalent of the massacre at Virginia Tech about every four days.”

What’s the time?

Renowned Management Guru

This one’s for those who thought watches are boring and nothing really innovative happened with them in a long time. This gadget from Swatch, titled Infinity, can play MP3s, record videos, create and view photo albums and has Bluetooth. By the way, it is also a digital watch. Designed by Pierre Merlet, the watch has a leather band and a detachable screen which can be synchronised and recharged. But before you rush to the next gizmo store, this one is just a concept and is still to hit the wrists of the world. Only if dreams had reality timelines... sigh!

Strong replacements will be Siemens AG’s prime challenge

IIPM PUBLICATION

The twin towers were reduced to dust, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed to death and Enron couldn’t have made it to court without, partner in crime, Arthur Andersen – ‘double trouble’ for sure! And this phenomenon of double trouble has struck the $110.4 billion German conglomerate Siemens AG lately. Europe’s largest engineering company, with sales amounting to a colossal $112.1 billion in 2006 (yoy growth of 15.8%), has been ruffled by investigations in Germany, Switzerland & Italy over bribery allegations of an amount totaling to $557 million (funded from corporate accounts) & allegedly used to gain land telecommunications deals.

And as always, the fish was found rotten from the head! Heinrich von Pierer, Chairman, Siemens AG Supervisory Board was the first to throw-in his towel on April 19, 2007, further fuelling speculation over his involvement in the scandal. But what was remarkable was the stock market rally that followed. His sudden exit sent Siemens stock prices spiraling to a six-year high of $122.94 on the Frankfurt Exchange!

IIPM Press Release :- A graveyard or a museum?

IIPM PUBLICATION

Well perhaps, an ongoing exhibition dedicated to all such ‘works of art’, called ‘Body Worlds’ (or Körperwelten in German), currently on at Chicago – up till April 29 – and Dallas and Phoenix till May 28, would be of some help in making you come to terms with such disturbing interpretations of life - and death. Conceptualised by renowned anatomist Gunther von Hagens, this exhibition displays human and animal corpses, with water and fats in the body replaced by a synthetic polymer, rendering the cadavers odourless and imperishable, while still retaining their exact musculature and anatomy. This process that has been developed by Hagens, is called plastination and was also used in giving the body and face, a desired posture and expression respectively.

The world yonder

IIPM MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE

Tourism revenues enthrall
This year has seen many countries cashing in on their strengths to attract tourists. World Travel & Tourism envisages revenue targets exceeding $7 trillion in 2007 (according to research supported by the World Travel & Tourism Council [WTTC]). The top contenders in the race include the forerunner – The United States – claiming a major chunk of $1.69 trillion (Source: World Economic Forum) this year with other countries battling hard. France continues to be the most popular tourist destination on the planet, with nearly 78 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2006 (official government figures). Asian countries seem to hold the limelight in terms of emerging markets, with China leading the way. The recent aggressive marketers were Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, with heavy spending on promotional campaigns, participation in trade fairs and reaping a harvest. Singapore earned tourism receipts of $13.6 billion and Malaysia’s tourism contributing to over 10% of its $131 billion economy (as per official estimates). Expect more action in the coming year, with countries struggling to grab a larger piece of …

The NYSE CEO Report 2007

IIPM PUBLICATION

According to the NYSE CEO Report 2007, a thumping 75% and above CEOs believe that their corporation’s ‘Management Team’ will have the maximum impact on their sales and profits growth. At such a time, it is unbelievably ludicrous that any corporation can believe that hiring management illiterates rather than MBAs could provide stupendously dynamic growth. The world’s best performing firms thankfully don’t think so! CEOs of 7 of the top 10 Fortune behemoths are management graduates. That’s 70% for you. Did I hear somebody say Jack and Bill had no MBA? To set the records straight for the innumerably vain soothsayers of the anti-MBA bandwagon, perhaps there’s nobody else in the management world who fanatically supports recruiting MBAs the way Jack Welch (an engineering M.S and Ph.D) has done, a fact he has accepted even in the columns he writes for us! Eat this – GE has been consecutively ranked amongst the world’s top ten MBA employers and Microsoft in the top 20 (Fortune Top MBA Employers 2006 Survey).

The politically and intellectually savvy Delhi CM needs to introspect deeply before the next elections

IIPM MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE

She is one of the rare Indian politicians, who have turned their shortcomings into strengths. Those branding her as a political novice had to eat their words after Sheila Dikshit was re-elected as Delhi CM. She is close to the Congress high command, even though she is not a member of Signora Sonia’s ‘Kitchen Cabinet’. And her proximity to the political top brass helps her in reining in political bugs like Delhi state Congress Chief Rambabu Sharma.

However, her nine-year long smooth sailing in the seat of power has received the first major jolt, when the Congress faced a humiliating defeat in the recently concluded MCD elections. The veterans in the Congress are now baying for her blood but she is not petrified at all. A close aide of Dikshit states, “She knows she hasn’t done anything wrong so why should she be worried?”

Look, where the ‘brains’ are going, brother!

IIPM PUBLICATION

Que:
Do you think our country would be in better shape if it had better managers, or do the “best and brightest” actually lead American business? ( Bruce Frohman, Modesto, Calif.)

Ans: It depends what you mean by business. If your definition includes hedge funds, private equity, and investment banking, then the answer is a fl at “Yes.” If by business, you’re referring to the industrial and consumer companies at the core of our economy, the answer is: “Less and less so.” And therein lies a problem.

OK, maybe it’s not a big problem yet. But there is definitely a worrisome trend emerging, in that a burgeoning number of talented senior executives are leaving publicly traded businesses for privately held concerns. And not only in the upper echelons – it’s happening in middle management and at business schools too. An increasing number of MBAs, particularly those in the top tier of their classes, are also answering the siren song of private equity and hedge funds. In 2006, for instance, almost 25 percent of the graduating class of Harvard Business School took jobs in those two industries. One reason, of course, is that compensation for senior managers in public companies doesn’t compare to the heaps routinely handed out by private equity and financial firms.

When disenfranchise & distraction become one...

IIPM MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE

They may not pore over income distribution tables, but they do know that today’s rich are building mansions bigger than those of the robber barons. They may not read labour statistics, but they know that wages aren’t going anywhere: According to the Pew Research Center, 59% of workers believe that it’s harder to earn a decent living today than it was some decades ago.

You know that perceptions of rising inequality have become a political issue when even President Bush admits, as he did in January, that “some of our citizens worry about the fact that our dynamic economy is leaving working people behind.” But today’s Republicans can’t respond in any meaningful way to rising inequality, because their activists won’t let them. You could see the dilemma just this past Friday and Saturday, when almost all the GOP presidential hopefuls travelled to Palm Beach to make obeisance to the Club for Growth, a supply side pressure group dedicated to tax cuts and privatization.

The main success factor of ING

IIPM PUBLICATION

Vaughn’s exemplary business acumen and know-how has proved to be a vital element in ING-Vysya posting robust results; and the total assets of the company has seen a 12.71% jump from Rs.161 billion in December 2005 to Rs.181.5 billion by December 2006. Their deposits have touched Rs.143 billion in December 2006, a surge of 15% from the figure of Rs.125 billion that was present in December 2005. Spearheading an organization that is into service, it comes as no surprise when Vaughn Richtor rightfully reveals the secret of ING Vysya’s triumph: “The main success factor of ING is its focus on the customer.” And when the interaction shift s to the brand image that ING Vysya mirrors upon, the Chief Executive gets candid, “I think it’s a thousand dollar question. I think the brand image of ING Vysya is evolving as an uncompromising brand, as we do not compromise with the needs of our customers.”

‘Steel’ing my thunder!

MANAGEMENT GURU

The major driving force that lured POSCO towards Indian soil was an availability of the critical raw material – iron ore. According to the agreement signed between the duo, the government promised the South Korean company mining leases to the tune of 600 million tonnes of iron ore over a period of 30 long years. But the three mining sites that were suggested to be given to POSCO, are all legally challenged by key domestic players – Tata Steel along with two PSUs, namely Kudremukh Iron Ore (KIOCL) & Bhushan Steel. Responding to the petition filed by KIOCL against the Orrisa government, Shashank Patnaik, Spokesperson, POSCO India, exclusively commented to B&E thus, “Prior to us, KIOCL has signed a MoU with Orissa Government (for Khandadhar)... But they failed to fulfill the conditions and hence the government is recommending us for the same...”

Bangalore: High on IT, Hip-Hop & Money!

MANAGEMENT GURU

After Mumbaikars and Delhiites, it's now the Bangaloreans who are getting richer by the day. The IT hub of the country is the third largest in terms of High Network Individuals (HNI). At present, Bangalore has around 10,000 individual dollar millionaires & 60,000 super rich people with surplus of Rs.45 million & Rs.500,000 for investment, respectively. A study conducted by American Express says, there are close to 83,000 HNIs and 711,000 super rich people in India. The city's investment into financial instruments like shares and mutual funds ($25 billion in 2006, as compared to $200 billion in Mumbai & $50 billion for Delhi) talk of the city's burgeoning wealth. Return of NRIs, entrepreneurs and fat pay cheques are some of the reasons for making this city Richie-Rich.

No Jack in the box

MANAGEMENT GURU

But he has three, did you say? So? Completing the trilogy of tour de force along with Leo Caprio and Matt Damon in Martin Scorcese’s The Departed, Jack Nicholson is a disappointing omission out of the personal nominations, at least in the Supporting category. Playing a kinky killer of an Irish-American mafia boss in Boston – his sexo-sinister histrionics professedly a personal contribution to “Marty’s” idea of the villain – Jack Nicholson certainly would not have minded sidling up to Meryl Streep in terms of the number of times of Academy nominations – he at 12, she at 14. A smile that breaks up only at his crow’s-feet, one that could equally pass for impish inane-ness or malicious madness, Jack ought to have been there even if for that one scene where he batters down on Leo’s arm-cast to check for ‘network’ traces, followed by a volte-face apology! Nevertheless, while he’ll be seen cheering the boys at Kodak Theatre, in those trademark dark glasses – one fetish, apart from women – he sure can feel good about pipping the likes of Sean Connery and Clint Eastwood in a recent poll on Sexiest Older Men! But then, it certainly isn't 'As Good As It should have Gotten...'

R&D: Research & Die!

MANAGEMENT GURU

In essence, isn’t it worth investing the moolah with one of the world’s best defense ‘corporations’ (as in Russia), rather than pouring tax payers’ money on a dud like DRDO, which is perpetually engrossed in learning the basics of third generation aircraft (LCA), while the world has already graduated to fi ft h generation versions? As India endeavours to affirm itself as a major power on the global geo-political map, the Indian armed forces will have to conform to the strategic ambitions of the nation. This, in the light of the fact that China has been spending massively to modernise its People’s Liberation Army (PLA), whose 5th generation J-12 program is in advanced stages; and their 4th generation J-10 fighters are doing operational sorties. Add to this the Pakistan factor combined with USA’s nonchalant eagerness to please Musharraf with F-16s, the rationale for the 5th generation aircraft for IAF becomes pretty apparent.

Without roofs...

IIPM PUBLICATION

Educating the ‘natural’ way??
Where on one hand urban India is witnessing investments for higher education, for a smaller population, millions of children are still waiting for some miracle that would provide them with amenities of basic education. With 70% people living in rural India, 35% under poverty line, the need for basic education with working infrastructure is glaringly evident. Roofless Municipality schools, without any facility of toilets and drinking water, one teacher to teach everything to all the students, is what no child living in India’s 600,000 villages, certainly is waiting for. Moreover, out of 146 million children that enroll every year in primary education across the country, 59 million drop out before reaching class 8 due to insufficient support by the government.

Although parliament decided to allot Rs.98 billion annually for promoting education, the amount is not even sufficient to provide roofs to the roofless mud houses, in which these so-called schools are running (leave the matter of providing food and toilets aside).

When Azim Premji Foundation can make efforts to educate Karnataka and Andra Pradesh alone, then why can’t the governments with such huge funds at their disposal not do it for the rest, remains an unanswered question.

“If you want it, measure it. If you can’t measure it, forget it”

IIPM Best MBA INSTITUTE

“If you want it, measure it. If you can’t measure it, forget it”

– Peter Drucker.

So, what’s your company’s human capital equation like? “dln(Y)it = ç1d-PUBit + ç2 d(PUBit*time) + Óm = 1 to M µÂmdln(Zmit).” What?!?!

Yes, the day might not be far when Indian companies would’ve made such a representation of their people and talent within the organisation in terms of formulae and other mathematical variables. Terms like Human Capital Index, HR metrics, HR Accounting (HRA) & Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), are commonly heard in boardroom discussions. Looks like corporate India is smitten with the quantitative school of thought even where it comes to its people functions. It’s not without a cause though; the mounting pressure on functional and chief executives of corporate India to show impressive figures is compelling one and all to create and effectuate tools to measure value in respective departments and returns on various investments being made.

Air Deccan’s phenomenal growth spurred the entry of more than half a dozen low-cost air carriers in India

IIPM PUBLICATION

Perhaps sheer guts, and a lot of tactical common sense, is what we inferred! Gopinath never has, and does not intend to give the best of quality, but rather, the best priceline offer the consumer can have! Worthy of mention in this context is Air Deccan’s ‘WOW’ campaign that was initiated to change the market perception of the carrier’s service standards and departures delays (which it now loudly announces to have improved!). Creditably, this well-built vision has propelled the low-cost behemoth to the number two spot (with a vital market share of 19.8% during December 2006) amongst a host of other carriers.

Brand : Cleartrip.com

IIPM Best MBA INSTITUTE

Brand :
Cleartrip.com
Agency : Beehive
Baseline : Making travel simple

Description: An airhostess gives the general safety instructions to passengers in an aircraft. We see Superman ask for help from her to keep his cape safely; then, she switches on the light for Krissh who is reading a book which talks about the fear of heights; she serves a glass of juice to Spiderman, who helps himself to a magazine as well and gets comfortable. Batman dozes off and the airhostess keeps a pillow behind his head. In the end, the VO exclaims, ‘All deals of airfare are so exciting that even super heroes can’t resist them’.

4ps take: We have seen super heroes as flying mortals who believed in helping others but little did we know that they would look forward to taking a flight. Surprising, right? But this is precisely Cleartrip.com’s strategy behind the ad. A single-minded focus on the high-quality and competitive services provided by Cleartrip travel agency, and this is an exciting – and unusual, may we add – way of doing so. The visuals are stunning with the colourful super heroes on board! In a sector, where best deals in travel are being offered by every other travel planner, this is very, very smart work by Cleartrip.com, one that’s going to get everyone to sit up and take note... Clear hai!

Advice for Nandan

IIPM PUBLICATION
Refer to 4Ps B&M’s cover story on the ‘Tech India’. While the Indian IT story has created a uproar in the domestic arena, its whereabouts in the foreign markets often go unnoticed. With Team India (IT) lapping up a formidable share of the global tech space, it is moment of pride for Indians. However, a word of caution: Beware of foreign players that have entered Indian markets in the recent times. As lack of focus in the domestic markets, would spoil the glory of being an International player.

America’s persistent failure to live within its means has been a major reason for the current global imbalances

IIPM Best MBA INSTITUTE
Meanwhile, persistent global imbalances will continue to produce anxiety, especially for those whose lives depend on exchange rates. Though Bush has long sought to blame the others, it is quite clear that America’s unbridled consumption and inability to live within its means is the major cause of these imbalances. Unless that changes, global imbalances will continue to be a source of global instability, regardless of what China or Europe are doing. In light of all of these uncertainties, the real mystery is how risk premiums can really remain as low as they are. Especially given the sharp brake on growth in global liquidity as central banks have been raising interest rates in tandem, the prospect of risk premiums returning to more normal levels is itself one of the major risks the world faces today.
