As the debate on ‘loads’ hot up... a peek at who’s wallet is on the line of fire!

The As the debate on ‘loads’ hot up... a peek at who’s wallet is on the line of fire!debate about doing away with entry load if investors buy mutual fund schemes directly from fund houses seems to be taking its toll. Already many biggies of the MF industry have increased their respective exit loads various equity schemes. “We have reduced the time frame on exit load on our arbitrage schemes,” avers Bhanu Katoch, National Head – Sales & Marketing, JM Financial AMC. For the uninitiated, entry load is the charge you pay to the distributor/ broker per mutual fund unit you buy. If the entry load is 1% then you pay 10 paisa per MF unit of Rs. 10. To get back to the debate – Securities & Exchange Board of India’s (SEBI) decision to scrap entry load is ruffling up a lot of feathers especially among distributors. But first for the aye sayers. “The move is important because it may give rise to contemporary solutions. The markets are dynamic and it warrants periodic evaluation of various market practices and regulations,” opines Rajan Mehta, Executive Director, Benchmark AMC.

But others like Raghvendra Nath, VP-Marketing & Strategy, Birla Sun Life AMC disagree wholeheartedly. “Scrapping the entry load cannot be a solution. There is a cost attached to marketing the mutual fund services to investors. Considering that SEBI has prescribed restriction on maximum fees to be charged, the marketing expenses are recovered partially through entry loads,” he states emphatically.

Market LG... They have an endless list of product innovations and to top it all, they have been stupendously creative in marketing themselves...leader LG India treads the innovation path quite often. Just look at the list! The first ever desktop PC with finger print security, country’s first blue tooth enabled car audio system, India’s first monitor with 3D display effects, Time Machine TV, India’s first and only full metal bodied phone – LG Shine... It’s not only about products, they have also intertwined innovation in marketing themselves. For the first time in the Indian consumer durable industry, the company launched LG first – the first true value exchange programme, the Club 100 and ‘I love LG’, the first Dealer Relationship Management & Customer Relationship Management initiative. “LG has been a marketing innovator. LG has continually strived to raise the level of trade, through its trade-leverage activation, and the level of the consumer, through its advertising blitz” opines Brand Analyst Harish Bijoor. And there’s absolutely no doubt about what the company is aspiring for – keep innovating. “The consumer electronics market is rapidly expanding and its profile steadily changing, innovative add-ons are definitely to attract the technology savvy consumer. This is the key deliverable for LG for its quality-conscious consumer,” says Moon B. Shin, MD, LG Electronics India. Well, innovation can be applied to anything and everything a company does, and few do it like LG!

I ICICI BANK... Their performance precedes them and if one talks about cutting-edge, they often precede everyone in the business...ntroducing the concept of working hours from 8 to 8 was just one of the ways ICICI Bank made its mark on banking practices in India. The bank has constantly rewritten the rules of the game in favour of itself in the banking terrain by its sheer ability to innovate in terms of product & service offerings. The ICICI Bank model of growth has been ‘Universal Banking’ coupled with personalized banking & increased focus on retail customers and they have literally given the big daddies of the business (in particular the PSUs) a run for their money. Retail customers have been their main focus and this undying focus is completely reflected in all their innovations. So, be it leveraging the internet (online simulation games) to offer better and convenient banking services, extending working hours, launching a jewellery card for the first time in association with Gitanjali Group, or tying up with IBM & IFC to set up a comprehensive online resource centre for SMEs, the bank has been quite firm on the innovation bandwagon. As Charudutta Deshpande, Head, Corporate Communications, ICICI Bank, proudly asserts to 4Ps B&M, “Internet Banking & the concept of 8 to 8 banking are two milestones that have helped change the face of the Indian banking system...” This bank surely knows how to take care of its ‘interest’s, no matter where the interest rates are headed!

So as a direct offshoot, he feels advertisers increasingly want to exploit such lifestyle publications as vehicles to reach their target audiences, who are more than likely to pick up such magazines. Vogue created history with a whopping 727 advertisements in its September issue, which has caught the fancy of print media organizations worldwide. But if one looks at the real picture, it capitalised on the very compelling desire of marketers to reach their target audiences, by giving them the opportunity to feature their products on ShopVogue. Vogue has also splashed into television, a much delayed foray into broadband entertainment.

On the issue of rising interest in women related publications, Das comments, “Tom Peters stated at the beginning of the 21st century that the century will belong to women. Subsequent social and economic development is confirming this trend.” Citing statistics, he explains how women’s literacy during 2003- 07 rose by 20%, outperforming overall literacy growth rate at 16% during the period. Similarly, women opting for postgraduate courses have grown by a huge 25% versus 16% for the overall segment.

Collaborative deals with sizeable peers happen to be a tried & tested ground...

IIPM, ADMISSIONS FOR NEW DELHI & GURGAON BRANCHES

No doubt, R&D spend has soared, but the number of new molecular entities (NMEs) and biologics approved by the FDA is definitely down. “In 2006 the US FDA approved only 22 NMEs and biologics, as comapred to 53 it approved in 1996 when R&D expenditure was less than half as of today” affirms a latest report by PwC. Moreover, “the competition from generic drug-makers has stiffened too... Collaborative deals with sizable peers happens to be a tried and tested ground as they have been doing it for long in biotech space,” analysts from global consulting firm, Frost & Sullivan shared with 4Ps, B&M.

So, whether it’s Big Pharma foresightedness or a forced outcome, one thing is for sure. Companies now seem to have recognised that even their present R&D expenditure levels are unsustainable, unless and until they deliver more proven results and cost benefits over the long term. Even if that means ‘Sleeping with the Enemy’, so be it! 4Ps

LIC

When IIPM comes to education, never compromise

The insurance major needs no introduction. It’s only nimbler now in the face of private competition

WithLIC 200 million Indians insured under the LIC shelter, the brand is doubtlessly one of the most trusted one in India today. Known for its deep rooted ethics and customer service, LIC well understands that it’s not only about doing business, but as a government organisation it has a social responsibility to fulfil as well. Despite the deluge of private insurers, LIC has maintained its numero uno status with an overwhelming 75% market share (and with annual premium income touching a splendiferous Rs.559.35 billion)! It leads the pack by a yawning margin with ICICI Prudential coming second with just 7% market share (phew). The company is also mulling over strategies to enter into the credit card business in India. LIC’s key strengths – like a far reaching distribution network that penetrates to the grassroots of India and its huge free cash reserves remain as impregnable for its competitors. Over the years, LIC has tried various ways of giving itself a facelift, including increased spending in branding and advertising plus thoroughly revamping its web portal. This public enterprise is really turning the heat on… and its enhanced brand image is only singeing competitors.

Life Banao With BIG 92.7 FM

IIPM - Admission Procedure

At BIG 92.7 FM, having an ‘Employee First’ culture gives the employees the impetus to walk that extra mile...

Just Life Banao With BIG 92.7 FMwhen punters were writing epitaphs of our age-old radio; this industry took a U-turn and rose like a phoenix from the ashes proving its naysayers wrong. Today we are swaying to the music provided by a host of radio channels thronging not just the metros, but also making the tier 2 & 3 cities swing to its tune. And in such a competitive environment, each channel is adopting different strategies to outshadow one another. In such a scenario the role of HR becomes all the more dynamic as talented work-force becomes extremely vital for the sustenance of a channel. While speaking to 4Ps B&M, John Lancelot Cutinha, VP, HR, Big 92.7 FM points out, “The employees of today are not mere employees – they are your partners & your associates. So there is a need to inculcate the right set of values & culture in them.” With close to 70 radio channels operating in the country, it becomes extremely difficult to stand out in the clutter & carve a niche for yourself. But despite being a late entrant in the sector, Big 92.7 FM has, in a short span of time, created a strong position for itself in the market. They created history by starting eight stations in just eight months. The radio station always planned to be ‘Big’ because for them ‘Big is Better’ & ‘Big is Beautiful’. Huge promotional activities and roping in Abhishek Bachchan soon saw them closing the gap with market leader Radio Mirchi. But the radio channel soon realised that this was not enough. The much-hyped marketing efforts need to be complemented with strong & talented workforce. And thus the role of the HR in the organisation became even more proactive than before. The think tank of the human resources at Big 92.7 FM were of the firm belief that there exists a strong relation between companies who are doing well & companies which have good HR practices in place.

So the first step for the HR department was to set up a strong culture in the organisation. And the foremost step in the process was to be an ‘Employee First Organisation’. John Cutinha says, “If people are happy & satisfied, then they would be willing to walk that extra mile to create a great product. Producing a great product would impact the company’s performance in a positive manner and lead to a greater employee satisfaction. Employee satisfaction would lead to customer satisfaction which in turn translates into shareholder’s satisfaction. So it’s the whole chain and one needs to add value at each stage of this chain and having an ‘Employee First Organisation’ culture helps to achieve that.” Big 92.7 firmly believes in its people centric approach, which is clearly reflected in its training programs, recognition & reward schemes.

Training is of utmost importance at Big 92.7 FM because it is the one factor that enables them to differentiate not only from other radio channels but also from other media companies. They have instilled a drive towards creating a learning environment across all their stations. For developing a culture of learning in the organisation Big 92.7 FM heavily relies on e-learning. And to strengthen this they have tied up with US-based firms like Danoday (for programmers training) & Keep Tingle (for RJ training). They also send some of their associates to US for training at RAB (Regional Advertising Broadcaster in the US) & NAB (National Association of Broadcaster in the US) and on returning these associates share their experience & learnings with the rest of the clan.

The HR at Big 92.7 FM was quick to realise that in the media domain there is a constant need to strike a balance between the technical & creative workforce, for each individual has his/her own set of needs, passion and prejudices. The first step is to understand them and only then think of measures to motivate them. The focus is at making each day a special experience for employees as erratic schedule & odd work hours might take a toll on their creativity, and also leave very little time for private life as well. So the radio channel has taken upon itself to celebrates the birthday’s of its associates in a big way. One day in the month is fixed to celebrate the birthday’s of all the associates together. An awards ceremony is also organised on the same day to give away awards like The Big Sales Associate, The Big RJ Associate, The Big Programming Associate awards et al. States John Cutinha, “The USP of Big 92.7 FM is their Catchya Awards. Catchya stands for spontaneous recognition of someone doing something positive in terms of great contribution or nice behaviour et al. ” Another important day for Big 92.7 FM is its birthday bash around the Valentine’s Day. The entire week is celebrated as the ‘Big Week’, where contribution of the employees is acknowledged.

Like any other sector, radio is also feeling the heat of retaining good talent as employees are constantly poached by offering higher salaries. To tackle this issue Big 92.7 FM has adopted a Cafeteria Approach in its remuneration policy. Here the employees have an option – within a frame work – to alter the heads under which they get their salary on a platter. This helps them to pick and choose the kind of salary structure they want as per their requirements.

Big 92.7 FM from the very start has taken its social responsibilities seriously & is now integrating its recruitment policy with its CSR initiatives. States John Cutinha, “We are planning to induct physically challenged people for copywriting etc. If these people are talented then the physical incompetence should not be a barrier for their employment.” The HR at Big 92.7 FM revolves around its robust people centric culture. Getting their act together and laying greater emphasis on getting its HR practices bang on, has helped Big 92.7 FM become the largest radio network in India and an example for the entire industry to marvel and soon follow.

Get ‘virtual’ly savvy!

IIPM - Admission Procedure

Internet advertising is big business

AccordingInternet advertising is big business to an Interactive Advertising Bureau official, revenue of US online advertising grew by 35% in 2006, over 2005. $17 billion worth of advertising was generated through US websites in 2006, the report said. The primary contributors were search engine and display advertising, generating 40% & 32% respectively, of revenue. The 10 largest ad-selling companies captured 69% of total revenue, but there’s scope for all. However, there is still room for improvement. For the amount of time people spend online, companies spend less than they should on online advertising – only 6% of overall ads spend. In contrast, marketers spent almost $58 billion in direct mail advertising and about $51.2 billion in newspaper ads in 2006. Surely not the way things should be.

Activa’ting the self...

Activa represents the new Indian youth...

HondaHONDA ACTIVA Activa epitomises the sheer power of a dream. Besides revitalising the Indian scooter market, it has harmoniously moulded the power of dream into a well-defined package of aesthetics, convenience, safe-handling, and simple, yet ultra-reliable fourstroke engine. Setting new standards for the new era of scooters in India, the Honda offering is superior by all means. Activa, which positioned itself at the premium end of the mid-sized scooter segment, sensibly resorted to feeton- ground approach and successfully delivered upon the promised claims. The product model range is specifically designed to cater to the entire needs of the young Indian families, reflecting the personality of a flamboyant youngster as well as a sober elderly. A self/kick ignition with a displacement of 102cc powers this 7bhp city slicker. The build is undoubtedly sturdy and high-speed handling is terrific. M. S. Madhukar (CRM, Planet Honda, Bangalore) comments, “It is the design and pick up which attracts youngsters… After-sales services certainly needs to be looked into as well.” It was the result of the sheer blend of technology and consumerspecific approach that helped Activa cross the one million mark within a span of five years. However, analysts argue that it is the brand which rules the market and merely being present in the market, with a product, is not much help. The mehendi ad campaign conceived by ‘Contract’ helped to further enforce the elements of authenticity and commitment. Operating in a fast-drying segment, HMSI with its Activa is now looking beyond just ordinary market share as its endeavours are oriented toward preventing the slide and help the market rejuvenate and blossom again!

TVS scoots over colours...

Why Study Abroad When IIPM Gives You 3 global Advantages!

...and wows dudettes with 99 of them!

Natkhat TVSNeela, Disco Green, Satrangi Narangi... take your pick. On offer are not nail paints or lip colours but a range of scooties to choose from. Nowadays, 99 is a popular number... From a Hutch connection to a McDonald’s Happy Meal offer, marketers across categories are using it as a powerful allure to book their customers. However, TVS Scooty is throwing a different bait around it. The auto major has come out with a catchy range of 99 colours to make it easy (or more difficult!) for the fairer sex to choose the colour they want to go about painting the city roads on.

The TVSlatest commercial of the scooty brand is set in a typical bazaar where vendors sell colourful chudee, dupatta and flowers. However, two chirpy girls go about asking for unusual colours from shopkeepers, leaving them amazed and amused at the same time. “Girls are very particular about the choice of colours, and it requires a very large palette to meet their needs,” says S. Srinivas, Assistant General Marketing Manager, TVS Scooty, offering the insight behind the range.

OfTVS late, competition in the scooty space has pepped up and competitors like Hero Honda Pleasure are on prowl announcing daringly - “Why should boys have all the fun?” In the past, bubbly Preity Zinta and charming Minissha Lamba have ridden the scooty brand promoting it as one which promises fun and freedom. However, this time around, its communication strategy rests more on colours and choice. Both Sujit Unni (Senior Creative Director) and Mathanki Kodavasal (Creative Team Leader) of McCann Erickson agree as they say, “Girls use colours as a form of self expression. Therefore, they always look for that particular ‘ONE’ colour which is very difficult to find unless the palette is as wide as Scooty’s.”

The TVSad is lively and keeps the viewer engrossed till the very end. Moreover, the backdrop of a vibrant bazaar blends perfectly well with the theme. “Fun is integral to Scooty’s brand equity and will remain a core element of all future communication,” offers Srinivas. The inspiration came from innovative lipstick and nail-polish shades like Orange Trap, Electric Red, Purple Mischief, Copper Mystery et al.

JustTVS like the ad in which the girls add sizzle and colours ensure vibrancy, the shooting of the film was not bereft of pep. “Characterisation of the bazaar vendors and selecting the right actors was a very interesting exercise. Also, the way the set was constructed, transforming an empty road into a colourful bazaar was quite unbelievable,” says the creative duo. The new face in the commercial is of Trisha, a leading South Indian actress. But, Preity’s fans needn’t pull up a long face as Trisha hasn’t replaced Bollywood’s ebullient queen Preity, TVSwho’s just another sparkling beauty associated with the brand for this campaign. “Like Preity, Trisha has a very perky, bubbly image that goes with the brand personality of TVS Scooty,” adds Srinivas. Despite the congested setting, the shooting of this film was a trouble-free experience. Yes, a teenie-weenie problem did arise at the editing stage, as the post-production team had a little too many brilliant shots to choose from. Guess, having too many choices is not always a great thing.

No wonders here!

Why Study Abroad When IIPM Gives You 3 global Advantages!

On No wonders here!July 7, 2007 – or 7/7/7 – the new Seven Wonders of the World were declared in Lisbon, Portugal. The new architectural marvels were chosen by votes cast by 100 million people from all over the world (by SMS or over the Internet), and the glittering function included appearances by Hollywood actress Hilary Swank (remember Million Dollar Baby and Boys Don’t Cry?), Bollywood star Bipasha Basu and British actor Ben Kingsley; there were performances by Jennifer Lopez and Jose Carreras too. Here, we give you a low-down on the seven great wonders that will forever remain etched in public memory – and, of course, history. And since we are all in India, let’s start with our very own Taj Mahal, The Taj Mahalbuilt by emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Then, there is The Coliseum of Rome (Italy), built by Emperor Vespasian; The Great Wall of China, the longest man-made structure in the world, measuring 4,000 miles; Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), which stands overlooking the Rio harbour. These are followed by Machu Picchu in Peru and Chichen Itza in Mexico. And finally, there is the city of Petra in Jordan, which is home to the Nabataean ruins.

Fed monetary policy: Back to the drawing board!

IIPM Mumbai Parables - Stories that change life

After the cut in the discount rate, markets are longing for rate cut in September

First,Marc Faber Editor & Publisher of ‘The Gloom, Boom & Doom’ Report I do not regard the current market conditions to be unusual but I do consider the market conditions that preceded the current correction (the period between March 2003 & July 2007) to have been unusual since they were characterised by extremely low volatility and a relentless increase in all asset prices. Compare the recent low volatility bull market to the conditions in the 70s!

We had, in the 1970s, every year, huge market swings. Therefore, what is unusual about the present is how just a minor correction of 10% could create so many problems among hedge funds and other financial institutions and how it led to calls by some ‘experts’ for the Fed to cut rates. This, especially in light of the fact, that it is precisely the Fed’s expansionary monetary policies, which have led to the current problems in the credit markets. However, it is indicative of the rot and the leverage, which are nowadays endemic to the global financial markets.

In my view, the current correction is of course, a minor one, when compared to the 1987 or 1998 corrections.

But, as was the case in 1987 & 1998, the stock market became, after an initial decline, as of August 16, 2007, from a near term perspective, incredibly oversold. On that day, the Dow first sold off more than 300 points, but ended the session basically unchanged. On the same day, we had on the NYSE only 10 stocks hitting 52 weeks new highs, but a staggering 1,045 stocks reaching new lows.

On Housing, inflation & now the credit crunch; the jitters were felt all around the worldAugust 17, the S&P 500 soared 34 points and the Dow Jones 233 points, as the Fed cut the discount rate. However, 52 weeks new highs expanded to only 55 and were outpaced by 149 new lows, which is unusual during such a powerful upward move. Personally, I am not surprised that the Fed cut the discount rate and injected liquidity into the system by moving the Fed fund rate below the target rate of 5.25%. I have repeatedly maintained that should Goldman Sachs’ stock decline by 20% off its high, the Fed would cut rates under pressure from the now ‘impoverished’ Wall Street jackals. I am also not surprised by the strong rally from the August 16 intra-day low because investors are still conditioned to buy the dips and not to sell into strength. I regard the fear to miss the next advance to be negative for the market from a contrarian point of view.

My best guess is that we have seen an intermediate low, but that the S&P 500, which, as at last week’s close, was still down 100 points from its July 2007 high, will have great difficulties to make a new yearly high. A very strong overhead resistance now exists between 1,500 & 1,540. Therefore, I would use additional strength as a selling opportunity. It is also my view that, in time, the recent August low and the March 2007 low at 1,363 will be taken out on the downside.

Designed to last long... Beyond the first generation!

The Sunday Indian - India's Greatest News weekly

Christian Designed to last long... Beyond the first generation!Dior, Versace, Giorgio Armani, Hugo Boss, Pal Zileri – these are the bon ton brands that have emerged from the Meccas of fashion industry – Italy & France, and this we all know. But what most of us haven’t known for long is the strategic and long term planning done by these designer brands which Indian brands lack. In simpler terms – these global brands have from the very start grown under the umbrella of a ‘professional group’ with deft vision and aggressive expansion plans, much of what has resulted into them becoming legendary names. Affirms Manuela Miola, Director Marketing, Pal Zileri, “Good designers are the intellectual property of a fashion house. But only on the basis of them, you can’t create a global market. It requires a professionally managed team who could handle everything – starting from the logistic to the front end global operations.”

No wonderROHIT BAL, Fashion designer these designers have created big organised fashion houses, which live on, even ages after the person who created them perished. Now consider the Rs.2 billion Indian designer industry (as per Ernst & Young’s 2006 estimate), there is no denying that Indian designers like Satya Paul , Rina Dhaka, Manish Malhotra, Raghavendra Rathore & Rohit Bal are creating waves globally, but question arises – what after they cease to exist? Would their brands live on? Well, the answer for now sadly is – a big “NO”! “I think we lack funds as compared to global designers,” is what Manish Malhotra gives as a reason. Sure enough, but lack of professional management beyond the first generation ensures that the brand dies with the founder. The need of the hour is therefore to rope in professional management, who can handle financial and logistic-related issues, something which Satya Paul is currently doing by roping in Genesis Colors Pvt. Ltd., a professional management group.

We had it made!

IIPM, ADMISSIONS FOR NEW DELHI & GURGAON BRANCHES

Deutsche Post in deep trouble

“Deutsche Deutsche Post in deep troublePost is a pioneer in Europe and now is being punished for it,” says CEO Dr. Klaus Zumwinkel, and betrays in these words a plea for mercy, as his company would find itself in murky waters, once the German postal market is opened up. Dr. Zumwinkel is lamenting unfair competitive conditions in the EU. The delay in opening up some key European markets has stalled the company’s expansion. And the new entrants – Luxembourg based Pin Group & UK based TNT Post would expectedly launch a brutal price war on the German turf. Pieter Schaffels, spokesperson, TNT Post, said, “We are looking for increase of 10- 15% in market share.”

In response, Deutsche Post is incessantly cutting costs & expanding in foreign markets where feasible. In 2006, the group improved its operating performance by increasing its revenue by 35.8% to $82.94 billion by consolidating all freight activities & focusing on the high growth Express division. Even their second quarter profits have risen by 13%, beating analyst expectations, primarily due to the DHL Express division that has had tremendous growth in Asia.

The clear stumbling block is its mail business, where revenues surged by a mere 13% since 2000. Express & logistics divisions have risen phenomenally; revenues stood at $17.2 billion (growth of 185% from 2000) & $22.7 billion (growth of 174% from 2000), but its cash cow remains the mail business, with 52% of total profits in 2006. The blow to this business will hit the company hardest. But with regulators refusing to show mercy, Deutsche Post has no choice but to engage itself in this long drawn bloodbath, hook line & sinker.
