Salem’s running...for elections

Salem is not the first of his kind, participation of criminals in Indian politics has now become a common phenomenon. Salem’s audacity only exposes the level to which the Indian political system has fallen.

Criminalisation of politics can no longer be brushed under the carpet. Even innocent and honest politicians, a dwindling breed, is not in a position to make any substantial difference. But the issue is not just about a mafia don vying to acquire political power, but more importantly about the support he is receiving from legitimate political entities like BSP and Shiv Sena. Very unfortunately, mass illiteracy within India brings with it additional stigmas, one of them being the contemptible support Salem’s garnering, and that too from parties that were expected to uphold some semblance of sensible patriotism. If Salem can do this, guess we’ll have to just settle for Dawood as PM one day...

India Inc. delivers half-year results with respect once again, the markets are in upbeat mood

When the Sensex started a downward slide from nearly 13,000 points earlier this year, India Inc. came under severe pressure, owing to both depleting valuations as well as dented investor confidence. The bear factor threatened to jeopardise the much-hyped growth plans of Indian companies. However, by ending the first half of financial year 2006-07 with a rocking financial performance, Indian companies have hit back just the way they were expected to. And the bulls are back, as the Sensex has crossed 13,000 points on October 30, 2006. Just like the stock markets, the Indian economy also looks incredible with a quarterly GDP growth rate of 8.9%.

A gift for Amazon’s wonderful quarter...

Disputes over patent infringements are turning out to be a daily affair, especially when we talk about the global Information Technology sector. On October 24, 2006, IBM gave a wonderful legal gift to Amazon. com to make it an occasion worth remembering. Guess what the gift was – a legal suit against the online powerhouse for the infringement of five of IBM’s patents! According to IBM, Amazon.com has knowingly infringed its patents and was informed about the same in 2002, but no interest was exhibited by Amazon to have a meaningful discussion over the issue. After waiting for four years, IBM has finally filed a suit. Interestingly, Amazon has already experienced the patent battle in the past when it filed a suit against Barnesandnoble.com; however, both had settled the dispute mutually in 2002.

But then, of late, things are taking an about turn, which are proving to be whammies on the face of commodities. Firstly, global markets that were sloshed with liquidity are now finding themselves in suffocation, as excess liquidity is evaporating from the system. Japan, which was showering the world with Yens, has suddenly tightened its grip (because of its decision to end its Zero Interest Rate Policy). The monetary base in Japan decreased by 43.4% in the second quarter (June 2006) and 29.4% in the month of August as compared to the same period previous year. Moreover, the end of Zero Rate Regime has also proven to be a barrier to “Yen Carry Trade,” which was fuelling speculation.
