Smoking could kill your job prospects too!

Smokers, beware. If you thought that cigarettes were killing you, here’s more: there may be a chance that you won’t get a job! The European Commission (EC) has said that companies in the European Union (EU) may “legally refuse to hire smokers” because EU anti-discrimination laws do not protect them. Recently, an Irish call centre’s job advertisement read that “smokers need not apply” (Ireland enacted a smoking ban in enclosed workplaces in 2004). In response to questions raised about the validity of this kind of a “bias”, an EC spokesperson said that the commission’s anti-discrimination legislation for the workplace covers four areas: age, disability, religion belief and sexual orientation, and, in general, the rules cover gender and race – nothing more. So alcoholism or smoking could well become bones of contention when it comes to looking for a job in Europe.
