The US must learn a lesson from the Virginia Tech massacre...

Renowned Management Guru

Two days after the massacre at Virginia Tech, a mentally disturbed man with a .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun opened fire in a house in Queens, NY, killing his mother, mother’s disabled companion & a health care aide. The gunman then killed himself. Sixteen months ago, in the basement of a private home in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, four aspiring rappers, aged 19 to 22, were summarily executed in a barrage of semiautomatic gunfire. Two teenagers were arrested five months later, and one was charged as the gunman.

I had coffee the other day with Marian Wright Edelman, President, Children’s Defense Fund, and she mentioned that since the murders of Robert Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968, well over a million Americans have been killed by firearms in the US. That’s more than the combined US combat deaths in all the wars in all of American history. “We’re losing eight children & teenagers a day to gun violence,” she said. “As far as young people are concerned, we lose the equivalent of the massacre at Virginia Tech about every four days.”

What’s the time?

Renowned Management Guru

This one’s for those who thought watches are boring and nothing really innovative happened with them in a long time. This gadget from Swatch, titled Infinity, can play MP3s, record videos, create and view photo albums and has Bluetooth. By the way, it is also a digital watch. Designed by Pierre Merlet, the watch has a leather band and a detachable screen which can be synchronised and recharged. But before you rush to the next gizmo store, this one is just a concept and is still to hit the wrists of the world. Only if dreams had reality timelines... sigh!

Strong replacements will be Siemens AG’s prime challenge

IIPM PUBLICATION

The twin towers were reduced to dust, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed to death and Enron couldn’t have made it to court without, partner in crime, Arthur Andersen – ‘double trouble’ for sure! And this phenomenon of double trouble has struck the $110.4 billion German conglomerate Siemens AG lately. Europe’s largest engineering company, with sales amounting to a colossal $112.1 billion in 2006 (yoy growth of 15.8%), has been ruffled by investigations in Germany, Switzerland & Italy over bribery allegations of an amount totaling to $557 million (funded from corporate accounts) & allegedly used to gain land telecommunications deals.

And as always, the fish was found rotten from the head! Heinrich von Pierer, Chairman, Siemens AG Supervisory Board was the first to throw-in his towel on April 19, 2007, further fuelling speculation over his involvement in the scandal. But what was remarkable was the stock market rally that followed. His sudden exit sent Siemens stock prices spiraling to a six-year high of $122.94 on the Frankfurt Exchange!
