No Jack in the box

MANAGEMENT GURU

But he has three, did you say? So? Completing the trilogy of tour de force along with Leo Caprio and Matt Damon in Martin Scorcese’s The Departed, Jack Nicholson is a disappointing omission out of the personal nominations, at least in the Supporting category. Playing a kinky killer of an Irish-American mafia boss in Boston – his sexo-sinister histrionics professedly a personal contribution to “Marty’s” idea of the villain – Jack Nicholson certainly would not have minded sidling up to Meryl Streep in terms of the number of times of Academy nominations – he at 12, she at 14. A smile that breaks up only at his crow’s-feet, one that could equally pass for impish inane-ness or malicious madness, Jack ought to have been there even if for that one scene where he batters down on Leo’s arm-cast to check for ‘network’ traces, followed by a volte-face apology! Nevertheless, while he’ll be seen cheering the boys at Kodak Theatre, in those trademark dark glasses – one fetish, apart from women – he sure can feel good about pipping the likes of Sean Connery and Clint Eastwood in a recent poll on Sexiest Older Men! But then, it certainly isn't 'As Good As It should have Gotten...'

R&D: Research & Die!

MANAGEMENT GURU

In essence, isn’t it worth investing the moolah with one of the world’s best defense ‘corporations’ (as in Russia), rather than pouring tax payers’ money on a dud like DRDO, which is perpetually engrossed in learning the basics of third generation aircraft (LCA), while the world has already graduated to fi ft h generation versions? As India endeavours to affirm itself as a major power on the global geo-political map, the Indian armed forces will have to conform to the strategic ambitions of the nation. This, in the light of the fact that China has been spending massively to modernise its People’s Liberation Army (PLA), whose 5th generation J-12 program is in advanced stages; and their 4th generation J-10 fighters are doing operational sorties. Add to this the Pakistan factor combined with USA’s nonchalant eagerness to please Musharraf with F-16s, the rationale for the 5th generation aircraft for IAF becomes pretty apparent.

Without roofs...

IIPM PUBLICATION

Educating the ‘natural’ way??
Where on one hand urban India is witnessing investments for higher education, for a smaller population, millions of children are still waiting for some miracle that would provide them with amenities of basic education. With 70% people living in rural India, 35% under poverty line, the need for basic education with working infrastructure is glaringly evident. Roofless Municipality schools, without any facility of toilets and drinking water, one teacher to teach everything to all the students, is what no child living in India’s 600,000 villages, certainly is waiting for. Moreover, out of 146 million children that enroll every year in primary education across the country, 59 million drop out before reaching class 8 due to insufficient support by the government.

Although parliament decided to allot Rs.98 billion annually for promoting education, the amount is not even sufficient to provide roofs to the roofless mud houses, in which these so-called schools are running (leave the matter of providing food and toilets aside).

When Azim Premji Foundation can make efforts to educate Karnataka and Andra Pradesh alone, then why can’t the governments with such huge funds at their disposal not do it for the rest, remains an unanswered question.

“If you want it, measure it. If you can’t measure it, forget it”

IIPM Best MBA INSTITUTE

“If you want it, measure it. If you can’t measure it, forget it”

– Peter Drucker.

So, what’s your company’s human capital equation like? “dln(Y)it = ç1d-PUBit + ç2 d(PUBit*time) + Óm = 1 to M µÂmdln(Zmit).” What?!?!

Yes, the day might not be far when Indian companies would’ve made such a representation of their people and talent within the organisation in terms of formulae and other mathematical variables. Terms like Human Capital Index, HR metrics, HR Accounting (HRA) & Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), are commonly heard in boardroom discussions. Looks like corporate India is smitten with the quantitative school of thought even where it comes to its people functions. It’s not without a cause though; the mounting pressure on functional and chief executives of corporate India to show impressive figures is compelling one and all to create and effectuate tools to measure value in respective departments and returns on various investments being made.

Air Deccan’s phenomenal growth spurred the entry of more than half a dozen low-cost air carriers in India

IIPM PUBLICATION

Perhaps sheer guts, and a lot of tactical common sense, is what we inferred! Gopinath never has, and does not intend to give the best of quality, but rather, the best priceline offer the consumer can have! Worthy of mention in this context is Air Deccan’s ‘WOW’ campaign that was initiated to change the market perception of the carrier’s service standards and departures delays (which it now loudly announces to have improved!). Creditably, this well-built vision has propelled the low-cost behemoth to the number two spot (with a vital market share of 19.8% during December 2006) amongst a host of other carriers.

Brand : Cleartrip.com

IIPM Best MBA INSTITUTE

Brand :
Cleartrip.com
Agency : Beehive
Baseline : Making travel simple

Description: An airhostess gives the general safety instructions to passengers in an aircraft. We see Superman ask for help from her to keep his cape safely; then, she switches on the light for Krissh who is reading a book which talks about the fear of heights; she serves a glass of juice to Spiderman, who helps himself to a magazine as well and gets comfortable. Batman dozes off and the airhostess keeps a pillow behind his head. In the end, the VO exclaims, ‘All deals of airfare are so exciting that even super heroes can’t resist them’.

4ps take: We have seen super heroes as flying mortals who believed in helping others but little did we know that they would look forward to taking a flight. Surprising, right? But this is precisely Cleartrip.com’s strategy behind the ad. A single-minded focus on the high-quality and competitive services provided by Cleartrip travel agency, and this is an exciting – and unusual, may we add – way of doing so. The visuals are stunning with the colourful super heroes on board! In a sector, where best deals in travel are being offered by every other travel planner, this is very, very smart work by Cleartrip.com, one that’s going to get everyone to sit up and take note... Clear hai!
